Light throws sparks Essay Example for Free
Light throws sparks Essay The article discusses the recent event that happened within the University of Zulia (LUZ). Last May 8 and 9, there had been launching of tear gas canisters at the Faculty of Liberal and Education as well as in the Faculty of Dentistry. The two consecutive events created fear and anxiety for the students, faculty, and administrators of the University. The incident left 17 students and 1 professor severely injured. As a result, the incident disturbed most of the classes, and led to the cancellation of all the classes in the morning. Classes in the afternoon resumed but fear was still felt by the students and the faculty. In order to address and prevent the terrifying incident, the University had already called the attention of the government. Although the University of Zulia is known for its autonomy from the government, Rose Nava, a Vicerrectora Academic, stated Article 7 of the University law which stipulates that in times of grave danger, the police must be called. The said incident was believed to be caused by the clash of candidates for the election of the Confederacy of Universities (FCU). Although no parties are admitting the violent act, candidates have spoken to their co-students to stop the violence and resort to proper and legal means for their concerns. Luiggi Nery, a candidate of the Initiative 13, said, ââ¬Å"We should avoid the registration of destructive actions. â⬠Jose Vine, also a student leader, stated that anything that results in human losses or action that leads to violence must be stopped. Title: Behind Closed Doors They Sign the Collective contract of Sidor Author: Henry Parada Lopez Published: 05 -13-2008 Tuesday From: Nuevaprensa. com (http://www. nuevaprensa. com. ve/index. php? option=com_contenttask=viewid=10060Itemid=2) The article narrates the recent event that involved the Government of Venezuela and Sutiss, a steel producing company. The government and Sutiss both signed a contract for the creation of another corporation which will bear the name ââ¬Å"Iron Steel Works of Venezuela. â⬠The mission of this new corporation is to enhance the steel and iron products as well as develop the technologies to create quality products. The contract signing was supposed to be conducted in public, but the higher ups changed their plan, as sudden actions against constructing the corporation created worries. Thus, rather than having the Guyanese Region present, the workers were the only audience in the contract signing. Instead of conducting a collective signing, President Hugo Chavez was given a tour of the corporation. The President truly believes that the promotion of mining and enhancement of steel and iron production would truly enhance the economy of Venezuela. President Hugo Chavez, a known socialist, said ââ¬Å"We are going to create this corporation to order all the system of production of our steel, since the mines where the mineral of the iron is produced. â⬠The President also said that capitalism is not good for a state and in order to stop that, ââ¬Å"one must continue dominating spaces inside the country. â⬠Though there lots of negative comments towards the corporation, President Hugo Chavez is positive towards the outcome of this corporation, not only economically but socially. In achieving success, the President called for action towards unity and cooperation. He encouraged the working class, students, peasants and the National Armed Forces to be matured and to leave each others differences for their own success. Title: Politics and Sex Should Be in the Same Scale Author: Charlie Garcia Published: 05-12 -2008 Monday From: CadenaGlobal. com (http://www. cadenaglobal. com/Noticias/? Not=174607) The column was about a question raised by a reader in which she asked the rights of women and how is it addressed by the government. As the writer discussed, we are currently in the modern times wherein women could easily relate to love and sex. Due to this, there is a need for the government to open up this topic and create official political documents addressing such issue. The writer stated that in the past, sex is not something that the international community is paying attention to as it is viewed as only an external factor. However, because of the emergence of globalization and strengthened Western relations, the ways on how the issues of sex are viewed have changed. Although openness in terms of sex can be observed in many societies, there are still countries that are not open to changes. In Afghanistan and Iraqââ¬âcountries currently occupied by the United Statesââ¬âwomen are killed or given death threats if they hold any government positions. In Venezuela, the government has very well reflected the current female rights but it is not enough to address the problem of the rights of women. As the writer put it, the ââ¬Å"the government at times find the theme of the female human rights too problematic to discuss in detail or they see it with little interestâ⬠. In the international community, there are evident examples of discrimination of women. These include the little reference on the female rights against domestic violence, sexual exploitation, and forced marriages, among others. There are no sanctions against countries that have a high percentage of human rights, specifically for women. Commentary: I often heard of the country Venezuela through international pageants, newspapers, television and the internet. As I have known, it is filled with interesting tourist spots due to its location and rich culture. However, as I was browsing the internet trying to find news that seemed interesting to me, I learned more about the country Venezuela. It is not simply a country with a lot of tourist destinations; it is a country filled with issues and concerns, just like others countries of today. As a developing country, Venezuela has a lot of concerns to address and one of them is the strict competition when it comes to elections. Just like in any country or culture, a person or organization that strongly feels about their advocacy would result in violence if he or she does not see that their goals are attained. I do believe that the launch of the tear gas canisters which led to violence was caused by their strong belief or was a form of protest. Although it is not a terrorist attack, it still brought fear to the University. The second article that I chose discussed about a contract that supposedly signed by President Hugo Chavez and Sutiss. I find the news intriguing, because the reason behind the sudden closed door the contract signing was not publicized. There are a lot of speculations that came into my mind, including corruption and conspiracy. The news was interesting but I suddenly questioned the real intentions of the government and the Sutiss in cooperating to establish a new company. The last topic was about sexuality and the current actions of the government towards creating female human rights. This story really piqued my interest because it focused on the reality of what really is happening in terms of the rights of women. The statement given by the writer, for instance, drew my attention. The creation of and addressing the human rights of women is very complicated to discuss as it may require recreating the laws of the land to fit the rights to be granted for women. It is evident that even in the modern world, women are still limited due to the restrictions made by the society and the government. Although there are plans made for the women to have determined and precise laws applicable to them, there are no direct actions made by the government to present their real interest to create equality between men and women. All the news articles made me realize that every country has its own issues that need to be solved. Further studies on Venezuela would reveal the roles of culture, society, and history in the issues that this country is currently facing. The hunger for power, development, and equality are the major struggles seen in these articles. Each of these presents the different sides of Venezuela which I have never seen before. There is a huge difference between life in Venezuela and the lifestyle of United States. In Venezuela, I believe that poverty is definitely hard to eradicate due to lack of education and opportunities for the people. On the other hand, development and progress is also a challenge to achieve. This is evident in the lines uttered by President Hugo Chavez in which he encouraged and called for all the citizens to unify and cooperate in achieving success and development. Although there are many struggles in attaining these goals, hope is still exhibited by the President which shows his passion and desire to create a successful Venezuela. Works Cited Garcia, Charlie. Oral Anti-diabetic Drugs
Oral Anti-diabetic Drugs Chua Mei Yi Several factors that need consideration when comparing two oral anti-diabetic drugs include degree of glycemic lowering needed to attain target goal range, effect of the medication on weight and lipid profiles, contraindications, side effects, cost, and potential level of adherence to the regimen. The two drugs for comparison are namely metformin and gliclazide. Besides having the same level of glycemic lowering percentage, both metformin and gliclazide are also considered one of the least expensive oral anti-hyperglycemic agents (Reinhold Earl, 2014; Mozaffari, 2013; Holt, Cockram, Flyvbjerg Goldstein, 2011). One of the potential problems with anti-diabetic medication, is that the conventional dosage form is given in 2 to 3 doses daily, and it causes a conflict in compliance rate for the elderly who has poor memories. In this circumstance, both metformin and gliclazide offers the option of single daily dose with either extended-release metformin or gliclazide modified release tablets. Of course the side effects, improvements and degree of glycemic lowering are the same as conventional tablets (Unger, 2013; Barnett, 2012). Metformin is well known for being the first line drug against diabetes type II treatment over the past decades for some reasons. First, Metformin as a biguanide, acts on pancreas independently, inhibiting the liverââ¬â¢s production of glucose, thus controlling blood glucose by improving insulin sensitivity and reducing insulin requirement. If itââ¬â¢s taken when blood glucose is normal or low, it does not stimulate insulin release in the pancreas, thus poses little threat of hypoglycemic (Lehne, 2013). Second, Metformin treatment results in a moderate reduction in circulating triglyceride levels, causing an improvement in lipid profiles that leads to the occurrence of weight loss (Goldstein Muller-Wieland, 2013). Third, having a high frequency of GI side effects due to the inhibition of carbohydrates being digested can be minimized by slow-dose titration and by taking the medication with food. No matter how safe a medication is, contraindications and adverse side effects still need to be observed. As for metformin, renal or hepatic dysfunction patients are contraindicated, and lactic acidosis due to metforminââ¬â¢s accumulation, is considered one of the rare but fatal adverse side effect. The only down side of metformin is, it should be withhold prior to radiological procedures involving contrast dye, as it predisposes patients to acute renal impairment (Reinhold Earl, 2014). Gliclazide, on the other hand, is classified as sulfonylureas. It works by increasing insulin release from pancreatic beta cells, driving blood glucose levels down, causing hypoglycemia if taken when blood glucose is normal or low, thus should only be prescribed to patients likely to have regular food intake. Driving or operating machinery during the initial treatment phase needs to be careful as hypoglycemia might occur (Lehne, 2013). Besides having minimal effect on lipid profile, Gliclazide causes undesirable weight gain due to increased insulin secretion and reduced glucose excretion (Meeking, 2011). Contraindications, particularly renal or liver disease patients, as well as rare but fatal adverse side effects of gliclazide, impairment of liver function, must still be observed (MIMS Australia, 2014). In conclusion, while there is significant debate regarding specific treatment for patients with type II diabetes, most experts agreed upon metforminââ¬â¢s usage as first line drug, judging from its effectiveness, generally well-tolerated cost effective and long term usage. Examples of Emotional Intelligence in Everyday Life
Examples of Emotional Intelligence in Everyday Life Based on our group opinion, emotional intelligence plays an important role in our daily life and workplaces. Without emotional intelligence, we can categories as imperfect individuals. Although we need cognitive intelligence to solve problem but cognitive intelligence just represent a small proportion in our daily life. Therefore we agree with the emotional intelligence is more important than cognitive intelligence in influencing an individuals success. Inside our suggestion part we will suggest ways to overcome the problem the problem from our topic and apply some suggestion into some parties such as employees, managers and organization. Firstly, is about individuals. Emotional intelligence is important for individuals especially in team processes. Basically we know that we have to learn how to social with diversify people, particularly once we take part in the real workplaces, we have to work with diversify people in one group. Inside the group without teamwork, everything cannot be done well. When we work with diversify people, sometime we have to be patient in our group, because different people have different behaviour and attitudes, when they work together in one team, sure internal conflict will occurs, to avoid it, we suggest that establish a well develop emotional intelligence on ourselves first. A person with well-develop emotional is rational when they are in work and doing decision making. Besides, we also know that problem solving and decisions making can easily affected by the differing emotion. Employees with high level of emotional intelligence are capable to manage the stress and frustration which occ ur in goal setting. On the other hand, as we know that emotional intelligence are related to interpersonal team processes which consist of conflict management, motivation and confidence building. Normally this problem we cannot inevitable it, because all this problems are the natural impacts of emotional intelligence. Therefore, every group member should learn how to cooperate with the others member by encouraging each others, understanding and concern their group, accept the comment from others people, try to learn how to control our emotional in workplaces. This is why we often say that individuals with high emotional intelligence, they are more engaging in management where can motivate and stimulate team members. To be a successful individual is not easy, except we should have cognitive intelligence, we also have to develop our emotional intelligence, this is a well-develop individual that many companies looking for. Sometime when we talk about emotional intelligence, normally it will relate to job satisfaction. Our group suggest that, in order to have a better emotional intelligence on job satisfaction is to understanding the conditions. It means that we need to know how emotional intelligence can influence the job satisfaction that will help to determine its potential importance for an organization and we also tend to know that through the competencies management literature we can fulfil the job satisfaction. For instance, if you have a good performance in an organization which mean have contribute an good idea for the company, you will get better reward from the organization. It will lead to an individual job satisfaction. Besides, having a good team member of emotional intelligence would lead to an individual to have higher levels of job satisfaction. Apart from this, a leader should have a high emotional intelligence to monitor the group members. But, sometimes not every leader can perform well in the workplace, because many of them dont have developed a good emotional intelligence and at last make the group force to split. One reason of this often happens because the leader lacks of confident in their ability to manage their own feeling and the others emotion. One way to overcome this problem is to give the leader various situations workforce. The leaders will force to face the situation. With this, the leader will able to across the entire situation one by one and slowly increase his confident level. At the same time, his emotion also becoming more controllable and he also manage to monitor his group very well. On the other hand, sometime the employees cannot perform well on job satisfaction; actually leaders can help them to achieve it. Therefore, a group must lead by a leader. Because normally people can become a leader is because they have high emotional intelligence they know how to control their emotion on work. For example, when an employees cannot do his well in his work, the leader cannot angry with the employees; in contrast the leader should motivate or encourage his worker to make their work more efficiency. That is why a majority company leaders have to send their members to a course that can train or manage their emotional. They will learn the important of being good emotion in a group, through this training programme, the employees will learn more on team work how to cooperate with his or her group member in a harmony environment without any internal conflict happens. Many researcher finalise that the leader should discover the emotional intelligence of the employee and work with their team to achieve success of a task. But a diversify workplaces is a challenges for a leader to well manage their employees. Because different people have different region, culture, emotion and attitudes. we cannot hope that everyone is the same, and the leader also cannot assume that every workers can follow their roles and regulation to well perform in workplace. Therefore, what should a leader do is to join inside their group, and discover all this things. Once the leader can mix with his group member, the group member will have positive emotional intelligence on work and cooperate with each members, because they well-know each others. After we discuss all the problem and some suggestion on employees and leaders, we will discuss about organization. The effectiveness of a company or organization is depends on the members of the company such as manager and workers. Many companies have a diversify culture of worker and this is easily to come to a misunderstanding between workers and leaders. Different cultures also become a big problem in the company which will bring to an argument. This will happen because all the members in the organization lack of emotional intelligence. To overcome this problem, leaders play an important role. Leader is the one who monitor the organization and he should try to settle the problem that the organization faces. In our group opinion, I think that the leaders should create a programme to build up the teamwork, let the employees know that teamwork is important in an organization. Throughout this programme, they will be lack of internal conflict happens. Actually when a company have well- develop leaders and workers in emotional intelligence, it will be an advantage to the organization or company. Because when they are doing their business or in-charge in customers service, they really need play high emotional on their job, especially when they meet a customers who purposely make difficult job for them. According to Daniel Goleman, the author of Emotional Intelligence, he mentions that 85% of a personal and professional success will be affect by our emotional intelligence. For our group point of view, emotional intelligence will bring more advantages to a human being. It not only can help a human in their job, but also in other sector, such as family, student, business areas and so much more. Take an example, a student with a C on his or her report card, can still be excellent at any job if he or she has the emotional intelligence skills. Thus, we agree that emotional intelligence is more important than cognitive intelligence. Based on our understanding, we think that people who have high emotional intelligence means he or she who are expert in controlling and managing their own feelings. In order to be expert in emotional intelligence, we can try to develop it personally. We suggest that to develop our emotional intelligence, a person must first understand his or her own feelings. What is the meaning of understanding he or she own feeling? Such as when I angry or sad, we can predict it and try to control it dont simply put in on our face, this will make the people all around u feel the unhappy emotional. Therefore, we should avoid it to influence others people. As Daniel Goleman said, self-awareness by controlling my own emotional, I will know my own weakness and strength. Thus, a person that intends to develop their emotional intelligence must learn to be self awareness or self cautious. Secondly, self-regulation is the way to develop our emotional intelligence. After understand own self emotions, we should try to control our own self emotion flexibly, that is we should calm down when we are in anger mood because it will affect our decision making. All the problem and suggestion above is based on our group members opinion. We want to share that how important of emotional intelligence is and how it influence our daily life, decision making on workplace and relationship. Therefore, a well-develop emotional intelligence people will be more success in their future life compare with the people who just relied on cognitive intelligence. We can be more hardworking to build up our cognitive intelligence, but emotional intelligence is different, we have to experience it through our working experience and daily social with others people.

Self-Damnation in Oedipus the King Essay -- Oedipus Rex Essays
Self-Damnation in Oedipus Rex (the King) à à à à Sophocles' play Oedipus Rex (the King) is a tragic tale of fate and hubris. At first glance, it seems that the terrible fates of the main characters are merely the doings of mischievous or cruel gods. That Laios should die at the hands of his unknowing son, that Jocaste should later marry that son to commit the crime of incest, and that Oedipus, the son, should be the actor in both crimes all seem to be deeds scripted unfairly by the gods for their own pleasure. However, upon examining the evidence in the play, it becomes clear not only that Laios and Jocaste directly cause their own fates by abandoning the infant Oedipus to die on the mountain, but that Oedipus is himself a willing participant in his own crimes. In choosing to abandon Oedipus upon his birth, Laios and Jocaste try to prevent the fulfillment of Apollo's prophecy: "[Laios'] down at the hands of a son, our son, to be born of our own flesh and blood" (Sophocles 201). They "fastened" the baby's ankles and "had a henchman fling him away on a barren, trackless mountain" (201). This done, the king and queen live their lives believing that they are safe from any danger that the child might pose. It is their cowardly act of attempting to escape fate that seals their doom, however. Not only do they decide to kill their only child, but they are unable to do so in a humane manner. Rather than relieve their son of any misery, they tie his ankles together and abandon him to the harsh elements of nature on a mountain. They are blissfully unaware that a shepherd has taken pity on the royal child and has delivered him to the care of King Polybos of Corinth (218). Clearly, by their self-preserving act of child-abandonment, Lai... ...renberg, Victor. ââ¬Å"Sophoclean Rulers: Oedipus.â⬠In Twentieth Century Interpretations of Oedipus Rex, edited by Michael J. Workplace for Disabled Employees Essay -- Exploratory Essays Research
Workplace for Disabled Employees à à à à A person with a disability, or handicap, can be defined as someone with a physical or mental impairment, which has a substantial or long-term adverse affect on his or her ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities (Employment 2). Handicap workers face many challenges in the work place that the average person overlooks. Also, many special arrangements and alterations have been made to the workplace for people with handicaps. Accessibility, transportation, workload, and salary are just some of the many issues that must be considered with the prospect of employing the handicap. à In some ways, most every individual is disabled to some degree. Was Public Health Better in the Roman Era or the Middle Ages?
In my opinion, the Romans had superior public health, as they had much better sanitation and plumbing systems, which were in the Middle Ages available solely in monasteries, rather than entire towns. This was due to the fact that the Romans' infrastructure and methods of treatment were more developed than Medieval ones, as well as the fact that the Roman government were far more involved in the health of their citizens than later rulers, who found war and developing trade far more important, and viewed civilians' health as their own responsibility. The Roman towns were also much better planned and built than those in the Middle Ages, which often placed wells and sources of drinking and bathing water in close proximity to cesspits and sewers, which led to infected water and cholera and typhoid outbreaks. Furthermore, many Medieval streets were filled with filth, such as animal carcasses, human and animal excrement, waste from butchers and tanners, and many more sources of disease, as b acteria could grow freely and infect people very easily. As well as this, there were also very poor food standards, and it was not unusual for dishonest meat sellers to sell low-quality meat which could have caused disease, although a law was instated, decreeing that distributors of bad meat would be locked in the pillory. The Romans also had better waste disposal and water transportation systems, which allowed people to obtain clean drinking water, although there may still have been a risk of illness, as most pipes were made of lead, which is toxic.Their medical skills were also slightly better than those of Medieval doctors, as most Roman doctors were much better trained and taught about natural causes of disease, which gave them a considerable advantage over the mostly Church-educated doctors of the Middle Ages, who believed more extensively in supernatural ideas and religion-based methods of prevention and treatment of disease. An example of this is the Black Death, which killed 5 0 000 people in Europe, and was spread very quickly due to poor sanitation, ineffective cures, which would in many cases have made the patient worse, such as ingesting bile or faeces, or relying solely on prayers or religious ideas, rather than actively seeking a reliable cure, which was impossible without a knowledge of the true cause of diseases, although they did attempt to limit its spread by locking up houses which were infected with the disease. However, the Roman Empire was also poorly quipped to deal with plagues, such as the one which occurred in AD 80, and claimed hundreds of lives. However, public health in the Middle Ages did have some benefits: the towns often employed people such as gong farmers and muck rakers to survey and clean the streets to prevent disease, and remove sewage, although it was not possible to employ enough to maintain the cleanliness. The Romans had a similar system which worked to much greater advantage. Medieval towns also developed regulations an d fines for littering and dirtying the streets, although these could not be easily enforced. As well as this, the rich were happy to pay the fines and continue to deposit refuse in the streets. Moreover, near the end of the Dark Ages, butchers were banned from working in the inner city, which prevented pollution and assisted in keeping the streets clean. In conclusion, I believe that public health was much better under Roman rule, although the Medieval government did endeavour to improve the situation (albeit without much success. ) This is further evidenced by the average life expectancy in each era: it fell from 42 in the Roman era to 35, proving that standards had dropped dramatically since the Roman period.
